FAQs

1. How much does it cost to join?

While there is no cost to join, all applicants must obtain a Police Criminal Record Check with a Vulnerable Sector Check before becoming an operational member of the Miramichi Ground Search and Rescue (MGSAR) team.

2. How old do I have to be to join?

You must be 18 or older to join.

3. What kind of time commitment is required?

We ask that all MGSAR members participate in as many meetings, fundraising, and searches as they can. That being said, we are all volunteers. We have an Annual General Meeting (required attendance), we have various training opportunities offered which range in length from 2 hours to 3 days, and we have several major annual fundraisers including the Striper Cup and Irish Festival. When at a search, you’re usually given a task which could last approximately 4 hours but if you are available you may be utilized for 8-12+ hours.

4. How often is MGSAR called out for a search?

A search for a lost person is an emergency that can occur 24/7/365. Call-outs can happen at any time of day or night.

5. Am I expected to search alone?

No!  When members participate in a search they are placed into teams of 3 or more based on experience and training. You will never be asked to search alone.

6. What if I can’t attend a search, training, or other events?

It’s not a problem. We understand that it is not always possible to leave work, find childcare, etc.

7. How far does MGSAR travel for searches?

We are often called to assist other teams throughout New Brunswick. We also work with neighboring GSAR teams in Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia.

8. Do I need to have a vehicle?

While it is very useful to have a vehicle to get to training and to searches, a vehicle is definitely not mandatory. When we are called out for a search, we typically meet at the MGSAR base in Chatham and require that members carpool whenever possible.

9. Do MGSAR members get paid or reimbursed?

MGSAR has no paid positions. For actual searches tasked by the RCMP, Miramichi Police Force or EMO NB, we may be reimbursed for travel expenses to and from the site.

10. Do I need to buy any equipment?

You must provide your own weather-appropriate clothing and footwear. MGSAR provides compasses, radios, GPS units, and safety googles for training and searches. Suggested Supply List.
